“And besides,” Laura added. “There are at least a hundred eyewitnesses.”

“I guess.”

“You still don’t seem convinced, lass.”

I smiled weakly. “It’s a lot to take in, don’t you think?”

“She’s a city girl, Sean,” Deb pointed out. “She didn’t grow up with shifters, remember?”

“Aye, that’s true.” He rubbed his hands together. “But you put on a good show.”

I stared at him. “Sean, it wasn’t a show! Something happened to me out there that I might never understand!”

Deb squeezed my hand. “Maybe you could talk to Jamie, get some perspective on what happened today.”

Sean frowned. “I’m not so sure that’s a good idea right now.”

But my mind seized on the idea. “Where is he? What happened after we got out?”

“He’s fine, lass.”

“More than fine,” Laura said. “He came second in today’s Trial . . . thanks to you.”

“Second?” I smiled. “That’s—”

“—a possible reason to disqualify him,” Sean finished.

“What? You can’t!”

Sean sighed. “The others are discussing it now. A competitor isn’t allowed outside help during the Trial.”

“The tunnel collapsed!” I protested. “It’s not as if I showed him where the tokens were or led him back to the surface.”

“But that’s exactly what you did, Nadia.” He raised his hands defensively. “It’s not me who’s saying that, mind.”

I sagged. “So, by helping him, I might have hurt his chances?”

“I don’t think it’ll happen. But there’s an outside chance that some kind of objection might carry through.”

“I need to talk to him,” I said.

Sean dropped his head for a moment, and then looked straight at me. “And I need to talk to you about him.”

“What about him?”

“The pair of you were intimate, weren’t you?”

“Sean,” Deb cautioned. “Let me talk to her about it.”

“I need to know if Jamie’s to be punished.”

“Punished?” I cried. “For what?”

“For taking advantage of you, lass. Remember, I saw him getting close to you yesterday.”

“At the desk? You mean the pheromone thing?”

“Aye, that. So how did the pair of you — how did it happen?”

And so, I was forced to explain what had happened when Jamie had lost his temper and began to shift. My cheeks warmed as I described how I’d used his shifter-swollen erection to distract him, inadvertently causing him to ejaculate onto my hand.
